This time Wight Lightning went the same way.To Danby it is just a job, but even he cannot hide a hint of regret as he also faces the task of pulling down the whole base in Halsey Street so that it can be developed into flats Nor can he hide an eye for detail. “I don’t think Peter knows about everything he owns,” he said. “We have 40 battery-operated drills and 20 jigsaws.”He probably knows about every nut and bolt. But the point he most wants to make is that the syndicate’s biggest asset is not boats or hardware It is people That is what he most wants to reassemble.. While Ellen MacArthur was holding her lead in the monohull category of the Route du Rhum transatlantic single-handed race, the leader of the multihull category was forced to retire after capsizing in a vicious squall on Tuesday night. Despite their proximity MacArthur did not see the upturned trimaran. She wrote in an email to shore: “Yesterday I was thinking about him – thinking go for it, you’re doing so well, so far ahead – and then this happens, poor guy, really feel for him.”Ravussin’s own team were due to set off from Guadaloupe yesterday in an attempt to pick him up and save the boat. The journey was scheduled to last three days, with Ravussin surviving inside his main hull. After his withdrawal, France’s Michel Desjoyeaux took the lead in the multihulls.
In her category, MacArthur was 65 nautical miles ahead of Mike Golding on Ecover.. It will be with a sense of profound relief that the England coach Laszlo Nemeth and his players will leave for Ljubljana this morning and their next Group E fixture against Slovenia on Saturday. After two training sessions for a short-handed squad they knew what was in store, and now it is time to get on the practice floor.Italy’s coach Carlo Recalcati came without two of his biggest stars, the London-born Carlton Myers and the powerful forward Gregor Fucka. But his squad still enjoys all the benefits Nemeth’s lacks; generous funding, a full programme of competitive internationals and training programmes backed by a public which cares passionately about its national team.England had stayed with Italy early on as the defensive muscle of seven-footers Andy Betts and Mike Bernard kept the scoring low.
But from leading just 21-15 at the end of the first quarter, during which only Betts and Tony Dorsey scored for England, Italy broke free. They outscored England 23-3 over seven minutes, all 10 of their players finding the basket, and swept through, over and wide of England’s defence with an irresistible blend of passing and shooting which only constant practice as a team can bring. At half-time Italy led 51-23, they then opened the third quarter with an 8-0 run and closed it 13-0 to lead 77-31. By now it was just a training session, with Nemeth pondering the work that needs to be done before Saturday and the next time England meet their public, against the Czech Republic in Birmingham on Wednesday.Scorers: England: Betts 16, Dorsey 8, Gardiner 6, Bernard 3, Baker 3, Williams 3 Italy (leading scorers): Chiacig 16, Righetti 13, Mian 13.. Fernando Vargas was suspended for nine months yesterday and fined $100,000 (£63,000) by Nevada boxing officials for testing positive for steroids after losing his title fight to Oscar De La Hoya on 14 September. The penalties came after Vargas told the Nevada Athletic Commission that he took responsibility for the positive test even though he had no idea he ever used the steroids. The commissioners seemed to agree Vargas that did not knowingly take the steroid stanozol, the same drug that cost sprinter Ben Johnson his gold medal and world record in the 100 meters at the 1988 Olympics. But they said he needed to be penalised for the test and that other boxers needed to know they will be dealt with harshly if they use steroids. “We like Mr Vargas but we feel this is the right thing to do,” said the commission chairman, Luther Mack.Vargas, who lost on an 11th-round knock-out to De La Hoya, threw himself at the mercy of the commission, saying he would never knowingly use steroids. “I don’t place blame on anyone except myself,” he said.Mike Tyson, who has had his own share of dealings with the commission, sat in on the hearing to give moral support to Vargas The two fighters share the same manager..
Ashley Giles has decided to return to England to recover from the fractured wrist he suffered practising in Adelaide just two days before the second Test against Australia, which was due to start last night. Giles, England’s left-arm spinner, was hit while batting against the Durham pace bowler Stephen Harmison on Tuesday and is not expected to play for six weeks. He becomes the third member of the original squad – after Simon Jones and Darren Gough – to be sent home.Giles’s departure is a huge blow to the England captain, Nasser Hussain, who has been reliant on the spinner to bring some control to the game when his side have been struggling in the field. His injury means that England have lost three of their front-line bowlers before the second Test of the most demanding series of them all. As a member of England’s one-day side, the 29-year-old will probably return “down under” in January, after the Ashes series is over, to take part in the final one-dayers against Australia and Sri Lanka.”I am very down about things at the moment,” said Giles.
